Work will minimize future traffic impacts in anticipation of the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project
(July 19, 2024) – Ahead of the Brent Spence Corridor Project breaking ground, crews will be performing overnight survey work on the Brent Spence Bridge. The work will begin Monday, July 22, and require overnight lane closures.
The work includes completing a mobile LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scan of the Brent Spence Bridge. This technology enables the Ohio Department of Transportation and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to create a high accuracy model using eye-safe laser measurements. Doing this will allow the project team to collect high-quality data without the need to repeatedly return to the site for additional data collections or measurements.
Weather permitting, this work will take place on Monday and Thursday with backup dates of Wednesday and Thursday. The data collection itself will be completed overnight Friday, July 26, using “rolling roadblocks” to keep vehicles off the structure at the time of collection (to minimize movement due to traffic). The traffic stoppages will be brief during each collection pass.
This work will include double lane closures on the Brent Spence Bridge, and on the approaches to the bridge between the working hours of 10:30 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Schedule of Work
Monday, July 22: I-71/75 southbound left two lanes closed. Right two lanes remain open.
Tuesday, July 23: I-71/75 northbound right two lanes closed. Left two lanes remain open. In Kentucky, the lane closures will begin on I-71/75 north of Covington’s Fifth Street exit (mile point 191.5).
Wednesday, July 24 (if needed): I-71/75 southbound left two lanes closed. Right two lanes remain open.
Thursday, July 25 (if needed): I-71/75 northbound right two lanes closed. Left two lanes remain open. In Kentucky, the lane closures will begin on I-71/75 north of Covington’s Fifth Street exit (mile point 191.5).
Additionally, on Friday, July 26, from 12:00 a.m. (midnight) to 4 a.m., both I-71/75 northbound and southbound may see short-term rolling roadblocks. These rolling roadblocks will be limited to 15 minutes each.
Alternate Route
Motorists traveling from Ohio to Kentucky: I-71 to I-471 southbound.
Motorists in Kentucky bypassing downtown Cincinnati: I-71/75 to I-275 eastbound or westbound. Motorists heading toward downtown Cincinnati are encouraged to leave early as crews are also working on a preventative maintenance and repair project on the I-471 Daniel Carter Beard Bridge. Additionally, I-71/75 northbound Exit 192 (Fifth Street/KY 8) in Covington will be closed nightly from Tuesday, July 23 through Friday, July 26, as part of an ongoing maintenance safety improvement project.
Weather permitting, the survey work is expected to be wrapped up by 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 27.
